Port Severn is the northern gateway to, and the smallest lock on, the Trent-Severn Waterway. Its 26 metre (84 ft) length limits the size of vessel that can through-navigate the entire Waterway. It is a quick boat ride from the picturesque open waters and islands of Georgian Bay, and not far from the camping, docking and trails of Beausoleil Island (part of Georgian Bay Islands National Park). The Severn River area here marks the rich transition zone between southern limestone and fields and the northern Canadian Shield and forests, with a mix of both southern and northern habitats and wildlife.Lock 45 has large grounds for boater camping and picnicking. Under Highway 400, boaters should exercise caution under Highway 400, as the channel width is restricted, and when high water flows create currents in the navigation channel below the lock. The lock has a lift of 4 m (12 feet) and can be found on chart 2029.
