A member of the literary Strickland family, Catharine Parr Traill came to Upper Canada in 1832 and with her husband took up farming in the Peterborough area. Of her many published works, The Backwoods of Canada is probably the best known. In it she describes with candour and insight her experiences as a pioneer settler. The private residence before you, affectionately called “Westove” after earlier properties held by Ms. Traill, was her final home.
