The Market Hall and Clock Tower is one of the best surviving examples of Victorian market buildings in Ontario. The cornerstone was laid for this building in 1889. Market Hall served as a farmer’s market until the 1950s. In the “progressive” era of urban renewal from 1947 to 1974, there was a strong move to demolish Market Hall to make room for new development. Many surrounding buildings were demolished, but a campaign to save Market Hall was successful. In 1977, Market Hall received historical designation and ownership was transferred to the City. The building is now used as a performing arts centre.
