Natives of Ireland, the Stewarts took up farming on the Otonabee River in 1823. As a justice of the peace and member of the legislative council, Thomas Stewart played a significant role in the early development of Peterborough. Frances Stewart's published correspondence, Our Forest Home, provides a valuable record of life in a pioneer community.
